DevOps engineer vs site reliability engineer (SRE): what each one does, the skills and tools, indicative salaries in India and how to choose the right path for you.
Short answer: DevOps engineers build and run the path from code to production: pipelines, infrastructure as code and containers. Site reliability engineers (SREs) own how production behaves: reliability targets, monitoring, incident response and removing repetitive work. Pay is similar early on, and SRE tends to pay a little more at senior level (indicatively ₹20–45 L against ₹16–34 L a year in India).
The two roles share most of their skills, and many engineers move between them. This guide shows the differences side by side and helps you choose where to start.
DevOps vs SRE at a glance
| DevOps engineer | Site reliability engineer | |
| Main goal | Ship changes quickly and safely | Keep production fast and available |
| Day to day | CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, containers, release automation | SLOs and error budgets, monitoring and alerting, on-call, incident reviews, capacity |
| Core tools | Git, Jenkins / GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS / Azure | Prometheus, Grafana, logs and traces (OpenTelemetry), Kubernetes, scripting in Python or Go |
| Measured by | Deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate | Availability against SLOs, time to detect and restore, toil reduced |
| Certifications | AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional, Azure DevOps (AZ-400), CKA | CKA, Prometheus Certified Associate, a cloud associate certification |
| Salary, entry (0–2 yrs) | ₹4–8 L | ₹5–9 L |
| Salary, mid (3–5 yrs) | ₹8–16 L | ₹10–20 L |
| Salary, senior (6+ yrs) | ₹16–34 L | ₹20–45 L |
Salary figures are indicative yearly pay in India (lakh rupees), rounded from public salary surveys (AmbitionBox, Glassdoor and PayScale India), checked November 2026. Pay varies with city, company, skills and certifications; product companies and global capability centres usually pay more than service companies.
What they have in common
Both roles need Linux, networking, Git, a scripting language, a cloud platform, Docker and Kubernetes. That shared base is why the first two stages of the DevOps Engineer roadmap and the SRE roadmap look almost the same.
Choose DevOps if you…
- enjoy automating builds, tests and releases
- like writing infrastructure as code with Terraform and Ansible
- want the widest choice of job openings: DevOps titles are the most common in India
Choose SRE if you…
- enjoy finding out why a system is slow or failing
- like dashboards, alerts, metrics and making systems measurable
- are comfortable with on-call and calm under pressure during incidents
A common route: DevOps first, then SRE
Many engineers start in DevOps, where there are more openings, and move to SRE after two or three years of running production systems. If you come from support or NOC work, you may already have the incident and monitoring experience SRE teams value.
How to start

Frequently asked questions
Is SRE better than DevOps?
Neither is better; they suit different people. SRE suits those who enjoy production troubleshooting and reliability, and DevOps suits those who enjoy building delivery automation. Senior SRE pay is slightly higher on average.
Can a DevOps engineer become an SRE?
Yes, and it is the most common route. Add observability (Prometheus, Grafana, tracing), SLOs and incident management to your DevOps skills.
Does SRE need coding?
Yes, more than most DevOps roles: SREs automate away manual work, usually in Python or Go. You do not need to be a full software developer.
Which pays more for freshers, DevOps or SRE?
Indicatively, SRE starts at about ₹5–9 L and DevOps at about ₹4–8 L a year. Few companies hire SREs straight from college, so many freshers start in DevOps, support or NOC roles.
