Short answer: in 2026 the best-paid IT roles in India are Platform Engineer, AI Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer and MLOps Engineer. Senior engineers in these roles commonly earn ₹25–55 lakh a year, more at top product companies. NOC Engineer, SOC Analyst, Network Engineer and Data Analyst roles pay less at the start but are among the easiest ways into IT, and they lead to the higher-paying roles in this list.

Below are indicative salaries for 16 in-demand roles, what makes them pay well, and a free step-by-step roadmap for each one.

Salary figures are indicative yearly pay in India (lakh rupees), rounded from public salary surveys (AmbitionBox, Glassdoor and PayScale India), checked November 2026. Pay varies with city, company, skills and certifications; product companies and global capability centres usually pay more than service companies.

Why these roles pay well

  • They run production. Platform engineers, SREs and DevOps engineers keep revenue-earning systems running, and downtime is expensive.
  • AI demand is high and supply is short. AI, MLOps and forward deployed engineers take AI from demo to production, and few people have done it.
  • Cloud and automation skills multiply. One engineer who writes infrastructure as code can do the work of many manual administrators.
  • Global capability centres. International companies are growing their engineering teams in India and pay above local service-company rates.

Best-paying IT jobs for freshers

At entry level the highest starting pay goes to roles that need strong fundamentals from day one:

If you are starting from scratch, NOC, SOC, QA automation and data analyst roles are easier first jobs. Many people move from them into SRE, security, DevOps or data engineering within two to four years.

How to move into a higher-paying role

  • Pick one target role from the table and open its free roadmap on our Career Paths page.
  • Learn the skills in order, from foundations to job-ready. Mark each step as done to track your progress.
  • Build two or three portfolio projects on GitHub; interviewers ask about these first.
  • Add one certification that employers ask for, such as AWS, CKA, Azure or Security+.
  • Practise interviews with timed mock tests and model answers on Interview prep.
