AWS and Azure compared for learners in India: services, job demand, certifications, salaries and which cloud to learn first for your background and goals.
Short answer: AWS and Azure offer the same building blocks under different names, and the skills transfer between them. AWS has the larger overall market share and appears in more Indian job posts; Azure is strong in companies that already run Microsoft software. Learn the one your target employers use, and if you have no preference, start with AWS.
AWS and Azure side by side
| Need | AWS | Azure |
| Virtual servers | EC2 | Virtual Machines |
| Private network | VPC | Virtual Network (VNet) |
| Object storage | S3 | Blob Storage |
| Managed SQL database | RDS | Azure SQL Database |
| NoSQL database | DynamoDB | Cosmos DB |
| Serverless functions | Lambda | Azure Functions |
| Managed Kubernetes | EKS | AKS |
| Identity and access | IAM | Microsoft Entra ID and Azure RBAC |
| Infrastructure as code | CloudFormation | ARM templates and Bicep |
| Monitoring | CloudWatch | Azure Monitor |
| Generative AI | Amazon Bedrock | Microsoft Foundry, including Azure OpenAI |
Terraform works with both, which is one reason it is popular: the same tool and workflow on either cloud.
Where each one is strong
- AWS: the widest range of services and the largest community. Popular with startups, product companies and many global capability centres. Usually the most common cloud in DevOps and cloud engineer job posts in India.
- Azure: fits naturally with Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, SQL Server and .NET. Common in banks, manufacturing, large enterprises and IT services teams that support Microsoft customers. Strong in enterprise AI through Azure OpenAI.
Many large companies use both, so engineers who know one cloud well and can find their way around the other are in demand.
Salaries compared
Pay depends far more on your experience and skills than on the cloud. Our indicative ranges are very close: AWS cloud engineers about ₹3.5–7 lakh at entry level, ₹8–16 lakh mid-level and ₹16–35 lakh senior; Azure cloud engineers about ₹3.5–7, ₹8–15 and ₹15–32 lakh. Certification paths

| Core role | Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) | Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) |
| Architect | Solutions Architect – Professional | Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) |
| DevOps | DevOps Engineer – Professional | DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) |
Exam fees are paid to AWS or Microsoft. Microsoft role-based certifications are renewed each year through a free online assessment; AWS certifications are valid for three years.
Which should you learn first?
- You have no preference: AWS, for the largest number of openings.
- You work with Windows, Active Directory or Microsoft 365: Azure builds on what you know.
- Your target company or client uses one: learn that one. Check the job posts you want.
- You want DevOps or Kubernetes roles: either, plus Kubernetes, which runs the same way on EKS and AKS.
Once you know one cloud well, learning the second usually takes weeks, not months, because the concepts (networks, identity, compute, storage) are the same.

Frequently asked questions
Is AWS or Azure easier to learn?
Neither is clearly easier. People from a Windows background often find Azure familiar; others find AWS's large amount of learning material helpful.
Can I learn both AWS and Azure?
Yes, but one at a time. Go deep in one first, get certified and build projects, then add the second.
Which cloud has more jobs in India?
AWS usually appears in more job posts, but Azure demand is large, especially in enterprises. Search the job portals for the city and role you want before you decide.
