Docker and Kubernetes explained side by side: what each one does, how they work together, when you need Kubernetes and which to learn first for a DevOps career.
Short answer: Docker packages an application into a container and runs it on one machine. Kubernetes runs and manages many containers across many machines: it schedules them, restarts them when they fail, scales them and routes traffic to them. They are not rivals; most teams use Docker-built images on Kubernetes. Learn Docker first.
Docker vs Kubernetes at a glance
| Docker | Kubernetes | |
| What it is | A tool to build and run containers | A platform to orchestrate containers at scale |
| Works on | One machine | A cluster of many machines |
| Main objects | Images, containers, volumes, networks | Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, ConfigMaps |
| Handles failures | Restart policies on one host | Self-healing: reschedules pods onto healthy nodes |
| Scaling | Manual, or with Docker Compose on one host | Automatic, based on load |
| Typical use | Building images, local development, simple deployments | Running production services reliably |
| Certification | None widely required | CKA, CKAD, CKS |
How they work together
- A developer writes a Dockerfile and builds an image.
- The CI pipeline pushes the image to a registry.
- Kubernetes pulls the image and runs it as pods, as many copies as needed, spread across nodes.
- A Service gives the pods one stable address, and an Ingress exposes them to users.
A note on "Kubernetes dropped Docker": since 2022 Kubernetes runs containers through containerd rather than the Docker engine. Images built with Docker still run unchanged, so learning Docker is just as useful as before.
When do you need Kubernetes?
- You run many services, or many copies of one service.
- You need zero-downtime releases and automatic recovery.
- Load changes through the day and you want to scale automatically.
For a single small app, Docker (or a managed container service) may be enough. Most companies hiring DevOps and platform engineers already run Kubernetes, which is why it appears in so many job posts.
Which should you learn first?
Docker. You need to understand images, containers, ports and volumes before Kubernetes makes sense. A practical order is in our free Docker learning path and Kubernetes learning path.
Career value
Kubernetes skills, proven with the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam, are among the most valued in DevOps, SRE and platform roles. See what they pay in DevOps engineer salary in India, and learn hands-on in our Kubernetes CKA course or the Docker and Podman workshop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn Kubernetes without Docker?
You can, but it is much harder. Kubernetes runs containers, and Docker is the easiest way to learn what a container is.
Is Docker Swarm an alternative to Kubernetes?
Swarm is simpler but far less used. Kubernetes has become the standard, and that is what employers ask for.
Is the CKA exam hard?
It is practical: you solve tasks on live clusters in a time limit. With regular hands-on practice it is very achievable; theory alone is not enough.
