Generative AI vs agentic AI (and AI agents) explained: what each one is, a side-by-side comparison, real examples, the risks of agents and which skills to learn first.
Short answer: generative AI creates content in response to a prompt: an answer, a summary, some code. Agentic AI uses a generative model to pursue a goal: it plans steps, uses tools such as search, databases and APIs, checks results and keeps going until the task is done. An AI agent is one such system; "agentic AI" is the broader approach.
Side by side
| Generative AI | Agentic AI | |
| Does | Produces content from a prompt | Completes multi-step tasks towards a goal |
| Interaction | One request, one response | Loops: plan, act, observe, repeat |
| Uses tools | Not necessarily | Yes: APIs, search, code, databases |
| Example | "Draft a reply to this customer email" | "Resolve this refund request": checks the order, applies policy, issues the refund, replies |
| Main risk | Wrong or made-up content | Wrong actions, so it needs permissions and approvals |
How an AI agent works
- Goal: the user or a system sets a task.
- Plan: the model decides the next step.
- Act: it calls a tool, for example looking up an order.
- Observe: it reads the result and decides what to do next.
- Finish or hand over: it completes the task or asks a human to approve.
Real examples
- IT support agent: reads a ticket, checks logs, restarts a service within allowed limits and updates the ticket.
- Sales operations agent: researches a lead, updates the CRM and drafts an email for approval.
- Coding agent: reads an issue, edits code, runs tests and opens a pull request.
Why agents need guardrails
Because agents act, mistakes cost more than a bad paragraph. Good agent systems give each tool the least permission it needs, require human approval for risky steps, log every action, test against realistic scenarios and set limits on time and cost.
Which should you learn first?
Generative AI first: prompting, calling models from Python and RAG. Agents build on those skills by adding tool use, planning and evaluation. Start with What is generative AI?, then follow the free AI Engineer roadmap.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT agentic AI?
On its own it is generative AI. When it browses, runs code or uses connected tools to finish a task, it is acting as an agent.
What is the difference between agentic AI and AI agents?
An AI agent is a specific system that acts towards a goal. Agentic AI is the general approach of building systems that plan and act.
Are AI agents safe to use at work?
Yes, when designed with limited permissions, approvals for risky steps, logging and testing.
